Helicopter takes to the skies with the power of human thought

June 5, 2013 ? A remote controlled helicopter has been flown through a series of hoops around a college gymnasium in Minnesota.

It sounds like your everyday student project; however, there is one caveat -- the helicopter was controlled using just the power of thought.

The experiments have been performed by researchers hoping to develop future robots that can help restore the autonomy of paralysed victims or those suffering from neurodegenerative disorders.

There were five subjects (three female, two male) who took part in the study and each one was able to successfully control the four-blade helicopter, also known as a quadcopter, quickly and accurately for a sustained amount of time.

Lead author of the study Professor Bin He, from the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering, said: "Our study shows that for the first time, humans are able to control the flight of flying robots using just their thoughts, sensed from noninvasive brain waves."

The noninvasive technique used was electroencephalography (EEG), which recorded the electrical activity of the subjects' brain through a cap fitted with 64 electrodes.

Facing away from the quadcopter, the subjects were asked to imagine using their right hand, left hand, and both hands together; this would instruct the quadcopter to turn right, left, lift, and then fall, respectively. The quadcopter was driven with a pre-set forward moving velocity and controlled through the sky with the subject's thoughts.

The subjects were positioned in front of a screen which relayed images of the quadcopter's flight through an on-board camera, allowing them to see which direction it was travelling in. Brain signals were recorded by the cap and sent to the quadcopter over WiFi.

"In previous work we showed that humans could control a virtual helicopter using just their thoughts. I initially intended to use a small helicopter for this real-life study; however, the quadcopter is more stable, smooth and has fewer safety concerns," continued Professor He.

After several different training sessions, the subjects were required to fly the quadcopter through two foam rings suspended from the gymnasium ceiling and were scored on three aspects: the number of times they sent the quadcopter through the rings; the number of times the quadcopter collided with the rings; and the number of times they went outside the experiment boundary.

A number of statistical tests were used to calculate how each subject performed.

A group of subjects also directed the quadcopter with a keyboard in a control experiment, allowing for a comparison between a standardised method and brain control.

This process is just one example of a brain-computer interface where a direct pathway between the brain and an external device is created to help assist, augment or repair human cognitive or sensory-motor functions; researchers are currently looking at ways to restore hearing, sight and movement using this approach.

"Our next goal is to control robotic arms using noninvasive brain wave signals, with the eventual goal of developing brain-computer interfaces that aid patients with disabilities or neurodegenerative disorders," continued Professor He.

Their study has been published today, 5 June 2013, in IOP Publishing's Journal of Neural Engineering and is accompanied by a video of the helicopter control in action which can be viewed here http://youtu.be/6LWz4qa2XQA.

Creating Meaningful Relationships In An Online World | Balance In Me

Posted in Balanced Relationships | June 4, 2013 |

A mere internet contact could become your new best friend.

What do your online connections mean to you? Are they simply a source of ?likes? on your blog, endorsements on LinkedIn, and great material to share on Google+? Or do you perceive them to be something much more valuable?friends?

Or do you perceive them to be something much more valuable?friends?

Thanks to the internet, we are now able to meet fascinating people from all over the world. And, with a little effort, you can transform an online acquaintance into a lasting friendship.

Here are a few tips for turning computer contacts into bosom buds.

1. Pay attention

You likely possess a wealth of information about the friends in your life. You know their likes and dislikes, what they do for a living, where they grew up, and you probably even remember their birthdates. But how much do you know about your online friends?

If your honest answer would be some variation of ?diddly squat,? then you need to get your act together and start showing a greater interest in the lives of your internet friends. Ask Martha from Witchita how her hip surgery went. Congratulate Brooklyn Bob on his blog?s anniversary. And send Lucy, the scrapbooker, a helpful link on page layouts. This will show each of them that you care enough to pay attention to what is going on in their lives. And it will help to foster closer relationships.

2. Focus on the friend at hand

Don?t you hate it when you go out with a friend and they spend half the time texting other people, people who didn?t even make the effort to be here in person? Your friends, both online and off, deserve your undivided attention.

If you are chatting online, don?t use it as an opportunity to multi-task. Instead, view it as a chance to get to know your friend better. Focus on what they are saying. Don?t conduct multiple simultaneous chats, surf the net for things to ?pin,? or harvest your virtual crops. Not only is it rude, it tells your online friend that they are not worthy of your undivided attention.

3. Adopt a role

When you think about your circle of ?in the flesh? friends, you will notice that each person likely fills a certain role. You may have a joker, an adviser, a nurturer, or even a hopeless flake that makes the rest of you feel better about your lives. Everyone seems to fill the niche that best suits their personality. What role do you play?

When it comes to forging an online relationship, you need to do more than simply have a presence. You need to establish a role in their lives. For instance, maybe you are the helpful person who regularly provides them with links that pertain to their favorite hobby. Or maybe you?re the one who always makes them laugh after a hard day. To nurture a friendship, you need to fill a role in someone?s life that comes naturally to you.

4. Don?t play a disappearing act

Friends are people that you know you can count on. They don?t disappear for lengthy periods of time and then waltz back into your life like nothing ever happened ? unless, of course, it is the friend who has assumed the role of the ?flake.?

In order to maintain an online relationship, you need to keep in touch. If you?re going away for an extended period of time, let your internet friend know that you?ll be out of touch for a while and that you aren?t deserting them.

5. Remember?facial expressions don?t work online

When you?re chatting with friends face-to-face, you can be your sarcastic self. When you call your friend the ?neighborhood tramp,? she can see that you are just joking. Your online friends, however, can?t.

Your clever jibes may not seem so clever without your accompanying body language. In fact, they may appear outright mean. Refrain from unleashing your rapier wit on your unsuspecting online friends. And never refer to them as the neighborhood tramp.

6. Make it 3D

One way to solidify an online friendship is to take it to the next step, entering the three dimensional world.

Skyping is a great way to put a face and a voice to the person that you have been chatting with online. It will give you a better idea as to whether or not the two of you actually gel. And it will give you the opportunity to show off your trademark sarcasm, facial expressions and all.

If things go well with Skype, you may even plan to meet in the flesh. Not only will this solidify your friendship, but it may also afford the opportunity to travel to somewhere interesting. This could be a great argument for seeking friendships in tropical climates.

Admittedly, creating a lasting friendship with an online contact does require you to overcome a few significant barriers, but with a little effort, it can be accomplished. Remember to treat your internet friends as you would any other friend ? minus the bazingas.

What tips can you give someone who wishes to transform an internet contact into an online friend?

Stocks mostly lower after manufacturing slows down

NEW YORK (AP) ? The stock market was mostly lower in midday trading after an industry group reported an unexpected slowdown in U.S. manufacturing last month.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged down one point to 1,629 as of 2 p.m. Monday, a loss of 0.1 percent.

Most other market indexes also fell except for the Dow Jones industrial average, which was up 54 points at 15,158, a gain of 0.4 percent. The Dow got a boost from Merck, which shot up 5 percent after reporting encouraging results from a clinical trial for a skin-cancer treatment.

The Institute for Supply Management reported that U.S. manufacturing decreased last month for the first time since November. Its index measuring the manufacturing sector was the lowest since June 2009. Investors had expected an increase.

Some investors are betting that if the economy weakens the Federal Reserve will keep up its $85 billion a month in bond purchases. Speculation that the central bank was set to ease that stimulus, a major support for this year's rally in stocks, has caused trading to become volatile in the last two weeks.

The "good news is bad news" interpretation of economic reports may support stocks in the short-term, but at the end of the day the economy has to keep improving for stocks to reach new highs, Alec Young, a global equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, said.

"This was a big miss on the ISM report," said Young. "Regardless of what it means for the Fed, ultimately you're buying a stream of earnings and you want to see the economy doing well."

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell as low as 2.09 percent from 2.17 immediately after the report was released at 10:00 a.m. In afternoon trading the yield was 2.12 percent.

The decline in the yield suggests that investors shifted money into U.S. government bonds in anticipation of slightly weaker U.S. economic growth. Investors tend to buy bonds when they want relatively safe assets that are less likely to lose value if the economy slows.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which is used to set interest rates on many kinds of loans including home mortgages, is about half a percentage point higher than it was at the start of the last month. It started the day close to its highest in more than two years.

As Treasury yields fell after the ISM report Monday, rich dividend-paying stocks like power and phone companies and the makers of consumer staples moved higher, reversing early losses. Those three sectors, so-called defensive stocks, had been investor favorites in the first quarter but declined in May as bond yields rose.

In other trading, the Nasdaq composite fell 19 points, or 0.8 percent, to 3,429. The Russell 2000 of small-company stocks was down four points, or 0.6 percent, at 978.

Even though stocks closed higher in May, there are signs that this year's rally may be starting to falter. The Standard & Poor's 500 index closed higher for a seventh straight month, but the index also logged its first back-to-back weekly declines since November. On Friday the Dow plunged 208 points, its worst drop in six weeks.

The Dow is still up 15.6 percent this year, and the S&P 500 is 14.1 percent higher. Stocks have surged as companies reported record earnings and on optimism that the housing market is recovering and hiring is improving.

In commodities trading, oil climbed $1.46, or 1.5 percent, to $93.44 a barrel. Gold rose $18.90, or 1.4 percent, to $1,411.90 an ounce. The dollar fell against the euro and against the Japanese yen. The U.S. currency dropped back below 100 yen for the first time in three weeks.

Among stocks making moves:

Merck led the Dow higher after news crossed that the drugmaker announced encouraging clinical results for a medicine to treat skin cancer. Merck rose $1.91, or 4.1 percent, to $48.61.

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store rose $4.12, or 4.6 percent, or $94.14 after the restaurant operator said its fiscal third-quarter profit rose 30 percent as higher prices on its menus helped increase its sales.

Centene fell 2.5 percent after the Medicaid coverage provider said a Kentucky court ruled that it cannot prematurely end a contract that has generated steep losses. The stock lost $1.25 to $48.25.

Eye-Fi's Mobi SD card sends images straight to a phone or tablet

EyeFi's Mobi SD card sends images straight to a phone or tablet

When Eye-Fi first launched its wireless SD cards back in 2006, most of us weren't carrying smartphones, much less tablets. At the time, the idea was to send your photos straight from your camera to your PC, where you could run slideshows or upload them to the cloud (if you were already into that sort of thing). Lately, though, Eye-Fi has been forced to rethink its product: the company just announced the Mobi, a $50 Class 10 card that sends images directly to your mobile device, bypassing the computer altogether. Designed for people already used to storing pics on phones and tablets, it works with a free iOS / Android app that acts as an image viewer. To set it up, you enter a 10-digit activation code included in the packaging, which you can use with as many gadgets as you like. After that, the card will continuously send photos and video to your device. And because the Mobi is a hotspot unto itself, your gear doesn't all need to be on the same network, or even in range of a router.

The Mobi is available today, priced at $50 for 8GB and $80 for 16GB. For those of you who expect to do some heavy-duty editing, you can still buy Eye-Fi's existing X2 cards, which send images to PCs, and can handle both RAW and JPEG. Additionally, those pro-level cards can be configured to send different file formats to different locations. If that seems like overkill, though, the Mobi might be the better option -- it's not like you can't eventually get those photos off your phone, right?

Miami tops Pacers, will face San Antonio in NBA Finals

LeBron James and Dwyane Wade can't believe you ever doubted them (Getty Images)

After years of conference finals surprises, the favorites won out. The Miami Heat defeated the Indiana Pacers 99-76 in a one-sided Game 7 victory on Monday night, earning the chance to face their Western counterparts from San Antonio in the NBA Finals.

The San Antonio Spurs, after nine full days off following their May 27 win over the Memphis Grizzlies, will attempt to dethrone the Heat in a Game 1 that tips off on June 6. The final round appearance will be the defending champion Heat?s third-straight trip to the Finals, while the Spurs will take to this round for the fifth time during the Tim Duncan era. San Antonio has yet to lose in the Finals since making its first appearance in 1999, though the team hasn?t reached this level since the 2006-07 season.

Despite the blowout score Miami did not come out full of fire against a younger and thinner Pacers team in Game 7, as Indiana actually led the contest by two following the first quarter. Indiana?s inexperience and unfamiliarity with the stage, though, shone through; because while Miami earned this impressive Game 7 win, the Pacers did just as much on their end to ease the Heat?s run to the NBA?s showcase stage.

Indiana turned the ball over nine times in the first quarter and 15 times by halftime. The rash of turnovers appeared to clear up in the third quarter, but Indiana still managed to dig its particular hole further by making poor decisions on either end, while earning five fouls each for stars Roy Hibbert and Paul George by the time the fourth quarter started. Already a squad severely lacking in bench production, the Pacers just had no chance with its best players sitting with foul trouble.

Hell, they barely had a chance with their best players standing without foul trouble.

Indiana could have been encouraged by the fact that they led by two after a turnover-heavy first quarter, but instead the team made mistake after mistake on its way to a 33-16 second period in Miami?s favor. The Heat just began acting as if the Pacers didn?t deserve to be playing in the first week of June, and Indiana seemed to agree with the defending champs.

The Pacers stopped acting mindful of the defensive glass. It stopped talking defensively after offensive rebounds, off of broken Miami plays, or during delayed transition breaks for Miami. Indiana?s terrible offensive recognition rose to the level of both its lacking offensive game and Miami?s stellar defense: Indiana did not go to its bread and butter pick and roll plays, it did not attempt to take advantage of its size, and it hesitated on good shots in favor of either over-passing or refusing to confidently finish on good looks.

Paul George, the team?s hoped-for second star behind Roy Hibbert, had absolutely no plan when it came to attacking the Heat defense. Once again, he tried to break the malaise by either attempting imprecise drives or three-pointers that he hoped would count for ten. George ended up fouling out early in the fourth quarter, missing 10 of 14 shots on his way to 13 points.

On the other end, Hibbert (18 points, eight rebounds) was a victim of a lack of communication from his teammates, and some iffy calls. The Pacers guards failed to rebound with the same effort that worked so well for this team previously in the playoffs, which led to quick Miami hits off of offensive rebounds, while the Pacers compounded the deficit with a series of frustration fouls.

Indiana did everything it could to prove that even if the team does have the talent and most importantly the matchup ability to align itself on Miami?s level; they don?t have the temerity and know-how to seal the deal. Miami put the Pacers in this position, there can be no doubt about this, but Indiana embraced its second tier status on the road in Game 7. Which is an absolute shame, for an Indiana team that is a legitimate NBA Finalist.

In the meantime, in that short stretch between this conquest and what could figure to be another one-sided win over a too-rested San Antonio Spurs squad on Thursday, laud these Miami Heat.

The champs struggled to start, but you could never call them hesitant nor lacking in confidence. The team re-initiated a defensive attack that some prior to the Conference finals thought would bring Indiana to its knees in a potential series sweep, while keeping a deft touch offensively with both ball and player movement. The team didn?t try to destroy Indiana with daggers in front of the home crowd, either. Instead, it worked to get to the free throw line, while admirably attacking both the weakest parts of the Pacer rotation while attempting to decimate its strongest attributes in both Hibbert, George, and the Indiana dominance on the defensive glass.

The Heat responded to the challenge with equal parts effort and execution, with LeBron James? mindful, steady insistence leading the way. They acted like champions, in Game 7.

As a result, the Miami Heat are four more wins away from getting to call themselves champions for a whole ?nother year. All they have to do is down the dynastic San Antonio Spurs, and make Tim Duncan an NBA Finals loser for the first time in his career.

Something has to give, and we can?t wait.

Prominent pavilions at the Venice Biennale

VENICE, Italy (AP) ? The 55th Venice Biennale, the world's most prestigious art fair, features national pavilions from 88 countries, 10 presenting work for the first time ? including the Vatican. No official theme ties together the pavilions, but several ideas are emerging as favorites, including greed, collective actions and the boundaries of the physical world.

The jury awarded the Golden Lion prize for "best national participation" to Angola, for an exhibition that focus on the African nation's capital city, Luanda.

Here are some other prominent pavilions in this year's edition.

UNITED STATES

Step back and Sarah Sze's "Triple Point" series of installations at the U.S. Pavilion is a vision of symmetry and scale, ambition and grandeur. Move in and there's another way to see it, through countless tiny and more intimate scenes, much like a painting by the Dutch master Pieter Bruegel.

Sze has gathered myriad objects ? it's no exaggeration to say from around the world ? to create her Biennale commission, and she spent 2 1/2 months composing it on site, slogging through Venice's rainiest winter in more than a century.

Her sculptures are collections of everyday objects, from fans to screwdrivers to packs of sugar, connected by sticks and twigs and suspended by string and yarn, to suggest a larger system ? a planetarium, observatory or pendulum.

"In each of the rooms, I was really thinking about how we model that amount of information," Sze said. "How do we make sense of it? The idea for each of the sculptures is based around a system of modeling information that is often beyond our ability to understand, like the cosmos or the weather."

BRITAIN

There is little subtle about Jeremy Deller, neither the fluorescent pink pants he wore to previews nor his Biennale art for the British Council ? work that takes bold aim at the whims of the rich and the powerful.

The central piece is a painting of an oversized bird of prey called the hen harrier that has a Range Rover in its talons. The work references the 2007 shooting of a pair of hen harriers on the Sandringham Estate on a day when Prince Harry and a friend went shooting. As for the Range Rover, it is the object of the bird's revenge, and Deller's swipe at the haughty who ride them, particularly on London roads where he cycles.

"It's an opportunity to get something off your chest," Deller said this week. "You know you are going to have an audience."

In the next room, a painting depicts the late Victorian designer and socialist William Morris, who appears as a giant throwing Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich's 377-foot yacht into the Venetian lagoon. It's Deller's jab at Abramavoich for mooring the vessel on Venice's Giardini quay, blocking the view.

VATICAN

Australian artist Lawrence Carroll was one of three artists invited to create work for the Vatican's debut pavilion. While being tapped was an honor, he said, it's all a far cry from the Vatican commissions given to masters such as Raphael and Michelangelo.

"Commission is a funny word. Commission implies they are buying the paintings, and that is not the case. I am not sure what will happen to them after," Carroll said. "This wasn't commissioned for the Sistine Chapel. This is temporary."

Carroll's work concludes the trilogy of themes decided by the Vatican: Creation, Un-Creation and Re-Creation. The artist, who until recently lived in Venice, said he could connect with the theme, as much of his work has dealt with giving new life to objects ? a passion that goes back to his childhood when his thrifty immigrant parents would find ways to extend the use of everyday things.

Four paintings hang in one room ? all large monochromatic canvases in white. One he calls "generically a sleeping painting"; it has a square space cut in the canvas where a folded canvas has been stashed, like a blanket, to be brought out at some point when needed. Another painting is embedded in a block of ice, which melts and refreezes cyclically, a process that continually modifies it.

RUSSIA

For Russian artist Vadim Zakharov, only women can save the world from corruption.

Zakharov's installation embraces the entire pavilion and is itself a metaphor for the Greek myth of Danae, who was locked in a room by her father the king, yet impregnated by Zeus in the form of a shower of gold.

The main floor is man's domain, where greed and corruption rule and where the masses can be dismissed as "peanuts," a notion the artist conveys with irony and humor through a man dressed in a business suit who sits on cowboy saddle shucking peanuts and casting the shells into a pile.

On the lower flower, Zakharov created a cave as a refuge for women only and which communicate with the level above through two holes Zakharov cut in the floor. Through one, gold coins are showered down. Through another, a man in a business suit hauls them up in a bucket and dumps them into a conveyor belt to feed the shower.

In the cave, women visitors carry umbrellas as protection against the showers of gold coins, and are asked to deposit some back into the bucket.

"It's about how you can corrupt with money," said Berlin curator Udo Kittelmann. "The hope for the future is women."

ISRAEL

Israeli Gilad Ratman's multimedia installation follows the fictional journey of a group of people who tunnel from Israel to Venice ? creating a hole in the floor as they dig their way in.

A video shows them departing from a hillside, digging the tunnel and arriving at the pavilion, where they set to work sculpting busts from clay they have brought from Israel.

"The journey is about nothing. It's to create a narrative that does not have any purpose or causality. It's the process of creating a work of art," said Sergio Edelsztein who curated the pavilion.

The pavilion reverberates with a guttural sound, a recording of all the sculpting, crawling and walking that have taken place along the journey.

JAPAN

Communal action is central to Koki Tanaka's work in the Japan Pavilion, titled "Abstract Speaking: Sharing Uncertainty and Collective Acts."

Tanaka's thinking about collective action crystalized following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which he followed from Los Angeles where he lives.

"When the earthquake happened, people collaborated and helped each other to deal with the strange situation," Tanaka said.

On Twitter, Tanaka followed as friends in Tokyo chronicled their hours-long walks home without public transport. People responded spontaneously, opening up their homes and businesses as temporary shelters. Tanaka said even his own gallery took people in.

Already before the quake, Tanaka had done a few video pieces as part of earlier work that also dealt with the outcomes of collective acts, such a group of hairdressers collaborating on the same hair cut or artists making pottery together.

"We realized this kind of video could be reinterpreted in the post-earthquake society," said curator Mika Kuraya.

FRANCE and GERMANY

It may be the spirit of Franco-German friendship, which has been at the core of postwar Europe. Or it may just be a collection of artists open to new venues after years of shunned proposals.

But France and Germany, whose pavilions stand opposite each other in the Giardini, took the unusual steps of pavilion-swapping this edition.

In the German Pavilion, French-Albanian artist Anri Sala produces a multimedia installation of musical recordings and videos of a piano concerto composed by French composer Maurice Ravel for the left hand. The show is called "Ravel Ravel Unravel," a play on the English verb "to rave" and the composer's name.

For Germany, exchanging pavilions wasn't enough. It invited artists from four countries to underline the international nature of artistic inspiration, inherently questioning national schemes. The artists include Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who contributed a sculpture of 886 antique stools that are arranged in interlocking arches. He was unable to attend the biennale, where he also has two other installations, because Chinese authorities denied him a visa.

Warning for Brits travelling to Spain over EHIC problems - AOL ...

Be careful if you're visiting Spain. A growing number of British tourists have been persuaded to pay for emergency medical treatment from state-run hospitals, despite carrying European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC).

The Association of British Insurers is now looking at more than 100 cases of British tourists being charged. What are your rights?

Travel pain in Spain?

Some Britons visiting Spain have been told that they have to pay up front and reclaim the cash via travel insurance - if they have any. If you don't have travel insurance, then you have, potentially, a big problem and a big bill.

Under the European Health Insurance Card scheme, all Europeans are entitled to the same free treatment as would any national be of any European country (plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland).

Currently Which? is advising Britons to snap up travel insurance, as an EHIC card "will not provide for every medical emergency or expense that might arise when you're abroad." However, the principle of free care still stands: if you're a European citizen, you're entitled to basic free emergency healthcare, wherever you are. The card won't cover repatriation costs or other emergencies, such as lost baggage.

Travel insurance?

The Department of Health confirmed to AOL Money that travel insurance was not a necessity in the EU. "We have advised that you're under no obligation to provide travel insurance in a state healthcare facility and you have the right to insist that your EHIC is accepted."

"The vast majority of people," adds the Department of Health, "using the EHIC do not experience any difficulty and we want everyone to have confidence when travelling that they will have access to the healthcare they are entitled to."

"But people," it went on, "should also be clear the EHIC is not a substitute for medical and travel insurance. Anyone travelling abroad should have EHIC and travel insurance, while British Nationals living in Spain should ensure that they register correctly for healthcare in Spain."

Insist on your rights

The Department of Health added that some British nationals living in Spain have found themselves unable to access proper treatment, as they have never registered when living there. (To register for healthcare in Spain, click on this link)

Which? Advice summary:

  • Insist on being treated under the publicly financed health system
  • Refuse to sign anything you not understand
  • Keep all receipts and documents
  • If your EHIC details are refused from a state-run clinic, get proof that you presented it at the time (as this could be key to getting the excess waived by your insurer)
  • If you think you've been incorrectly charged, you may be entitled to reimbursement from the Department of Work and Pensions
  • Travel insurance is advised though it's not a necessity for most circumstances
