Computer Science Teacher: Computer Science Education Act (CSEA)

This looks like a very good piece of legislation. The basic idea is not to create new programs or additional spending but to reduce barriers to creating more computer science programs. More information at About the Computer Science Education Act on the Computing in the Core website.
The Computer Science Education Act (CSEA) is a piece of legislation that has been introduced in the US House of Representatives that would make important changes to federal education laws to remove barriers to computer science in K-12 classrooms nationwide. Read a summary of the issues the bill addresses and what the bill does here.
Code.org, Computing in the Core and its members, and K-12 computer science education advocates support this bipartisan legislation.
The Computer Science Education Act would:
  • Amend the statutory definition of ?core academic subjects? to add computer science
  • Define computer science
  • Add computer science to the academic subjects addressed by federal teacher professional development programs
This is something we can get behind by telling our Congressional representatives that they should co-sponsor and support this bill. My rep has already heard from me. Has yours heard from you?

Historic rulings on gay marriage

A gay rights activist waves a flag in front of the U.S. Supreme Court building June 24, 2013. (Win McNamee/Get??

The Supreme Court released two major decisions expanding gay rights across the country Wednesday as hordes of cheering demonstrators greeted the news outside. The justices struck down a federal law barring the recognition of same-sex marriage in a split decision, ruling that the law violates the rights of gays and lesbians, and intrudes into states' rights to define and regulate marriage. The court also dismissed a case involving California's gay marriage ban, ruling that supporters of the ban did not have the legal standing, or right, to appeal a lower court's decision striking down Proposition 8 as discriminatory.

The decision clears the way for gay marriage to again be legal in the nation's most populous state, even though the justices did not address the broader legal argument that gay people have a fundamental right to marriage.

The twin decisions throw the fight over gay marriage back to the states, since the court ruled the federal government must recognize the unions if states sanction them, but did not curtail states' rights to ban gay marriage if they choose.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, the court's conservative-leaning swing vote with a legal history of supporting gay rights, joined his liberal colleagues in the DOMA decision, which will dramatically expand the rights of married gay couples in the country to access more than 1,000 federal benefits and responsibilities of marriage previously denied them.

"The avowed purpose and practical effect of the law here in question are to impose a disadvantage, a separate status, and so a stigma upon all who enter into same-sex marriages made lawful by the unquestioned authority of the States," Kennedy wrote of DOMA. He concluded that states must be allowed by the federal government to confer "dignity" on same-sex couples if they choose to legalize gay marriage. DOMA "undermines" same-sex marriages in visible ways and "tells those couples, and all the world, that their otherwise valid marriages are unworthy of federal recognition."

Eighty-three-year-old New Yorker Edith Windsor brought the DOMA suit after she was made to pay more than $363,000 in estate taxes when her same-sex spouse died. If the federal government had recognized her marriage, Windsor would not have owed the sum. She argued that the government has no rational reason to exclude her marriage (she and her late partner, Thea Spyer, had been married since 2007, and together for more than four decades) from the benefits and obligations other married couples receive.

DOMA was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996, and prevented the government from granting marriage benefits in more than 1,000 federal statutes to same-sex married couples in the 12 states and District of Columbia that allow gay marriage.

With this decision, Kennedy furthers his reputation as a defender of gay rights from the bench. He authored two of the most important Supreme Court decisions involving, and ultimately affirming, gay rights: Lawrence v. Texas (2003) and Romer v. Evans (1996). In Romer, Kennedy struck down Colorado's constitutional amendment banning localities from passing anti-discrimination laws protecting gays and lesbians. In Lawrence, Kennedy invalidated state anti-sodomy laws, ruling that gay people have a right to engage in sexual behavior in their own homes free from the fear of punishment.

Legal experts said the DOMA decision lays the foundation for a future Supreme Court ruling that could find a broader right for same-sex couples to marry.

The decisions mark the first time the highest court has waded into the issue of same-sex marriage. Just 40 years ago, the Supreme Court tersely refused to hear a case brought by a gay couple who wanted to get married in Minnesota, writing that that their claim raised no significant legal issue. At the time, legal opinions often treated homosexuality as criminal, sexually deviant behavior rather than involuntary sexual orientation. Since then, public opinion has changed dramatically on gay people and same-sex marriage, with a majority of Americans only just recently saying they support gay unions. Now, 12 states representing about 18 percent of the U.S. population allow same-sex marriage. With California, the percentage of people living in gay marriage states shoots up to 30.

With the Prop 8 decision, the Supreme Court refused to wade into the constitutional issues surrounding the California gay marriage case, dismissing the Proposition 8 argument on procedural grounds. The legal dodge means a lower court's ruling making same-sex marriage legal in California will most likely stand, opening the door to marriage to gays and lesbians in the country's most populous state without directly ruling on whether gay people have a constitutional right to marriage.

California voters passed Proposition 8 to ban same-sex marriage in 2008, after 18,000 same-sex couples had already tied the knot under a state Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage. A same-sex married couple with children, Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, sued the state of California when their six-month-old marriage was invalidated by the ballot initiative. They argued that Proposition 8 discriminated against them and their union based only on their sexual orientation, and that the state had no rational reason for denying them the right to marry. Two lower courts ruled in their favor, and then-California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced he would no longer defend Proposition 8 in court, leaving a coalition of Prop 8 supporters led by a former state legislator to take up its defense.

Chief Justice John Roberts joined with Antonin Scalia, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan to rule the defenders of Prop 8 did not have the standing to defend the ban in court. The unlikely coalition of liberals and conservatives argued that the Prop 8 supporters could not prove they were directly injured by the lower court's decision to overturn the ban and allow gay people to marry.

Same-sex marriage will most likely not be immediately legal in California, since the losing side may be given a few weeks to petition the courts.

The Prop 8 case was argued by two high-profile lawyers, Ted Olson and David Boies, who previously faced off against each other in Bush v. Gore. Olson, a conservative and Bush's former solicitor general, and Boies, a liberal, have cast gay marriage as the civil rights issue of our time.

Boies said on the steps of the Supreme Court Wednesday that the court had shown gay marriage does not harm society. "Today the United States Supreme Court said as much," Boies said. "They cannot point to anything that harms them because these two love each other.? President Barack Obama also reportedly called Chad Griffin, the president of the Human Rights Campaign gay rights group, to congratulate him on the legal victory. "We're proud of you guys, and we're proud to have this in California," the president said, according to audio on MSNBC.

"The laws of our land are catching up to the fundamental truth that millions of Americans hold in our hearts: when all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all more free," the president said in a statement.

Olson made the argument that gay marriage should be a conservative cause in a recent interview with NPR. "If you are a conservative, how could you be against a relationship in which people who love one another want to publicly state their vows ... and engage in a household in which they are committed to one another and become part of the community and accepted like other people?"

The Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG), a coalition of mostly Republican House lawmakers, defended DOMA since the Obama administration announced they believed the law was unconstitutional in 2011. (Chief Justice John Roberts criticized the president for this move during oral arguments in the case, saying the president lacked ?the courage of his convictions? in continuing to enforce the law but no longer defending it in court.)

"While I am obviously disappointed in the ruling, it is always critical that we protect our system of checks and balances," House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said in a statement. "A robust national debate over marriage will continue in the public square, and it is my hope that states will define marriage as the union between one man and one woman."

Bomb attacks in Syrian capital kill 8 people

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Suicide bombers targeted security compounds in Damascus and a car bomb exploded in a pro-regime district there Sunday, killing at least eight people, the latest in a surge of civil war violence in the capital.

In northern Syria, a car bomb killed 12 soldiers in Aleppo, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists in Syria for information. It had no other details, and the government did not comment.

In neighboring Lebanon, meanwhile, fierce clashes erupted between the Lebanese military and supporters of a hard-line Sunni Muslim cleric, in the latest spillover from Syria. Six Lebanese soldiers were killed, according to the army, which vowed to hit back with an "iron hand."

Heavy fighting with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades in Sidon caused panic in the southern coastal city, which until recently had been largely spared the violence hitting other areas. Many people who were spending the day on the beach hurried home, while others living on high floors came down or fled to safer areas. Gray smoke billowed over parts of the city and residents caught in the fire appealed for help.

The fighting broke out in the predominantly Sunni city after supporters of Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir, a virulent critic of the powerful Shiite militant Hezbollah group, opened fire on an army checkpoint.

The military issued a statement confirming that six soldiers died in the shooting, including three officers. It said the shooting was unprovoked.

Syria's state-run news agency SANA said three suicide bombers blew themselves up while trying to break into the Rukneddine police station in northern Damascus, killing five people and wounding several others. SANA said three would-be suicide bombers also tried to break into the Criminal Security Branch in the southern Bab Mousalla area but were caught by security forces before they could detonate their explosives.

Activists confirmed the death toll.

SANA said a car bomb exploded in Mazzeh 86 district in the capital, killing three people, including a 3-year-old boy. Residents of the district are mostly Alawites, an offshoot Shiite sect that President Bashar Assad's family belongs to. The opposition forces fighting against Assad's regime are mostly Sunni Muslims.

Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the Damascus explosions, but they bore the hallmarks of al-Qaida-linked groups that have joined forces with rebels fighting to oust Assad.

The attacks in Syria's two largest cities came as government forces pressed an offensive on the outskirts of the capital.

SANA carried a statement by the Interior Ministry saying that the Damascus attacks were a "new escalation by terrorist groups," a term used by the government to refer to the rebels.

More than 93,000 people have been killed in Syrian conflict that started in March 2011 as peaceful protest against Assad's rule. In the past year, the war has taken on sectarian overtones.

The conflict has increasingly spilled across Syria's borders.

The clashes in Sidon centered on the Bilal bin Rabbah Mosque, where al-Assir preaches. The cleric is believed to have hundreds of armed supporters in Sidon who fought back Sunday. Dozens of al-Assir's gunmen also partially shut down the main highway linking south Lebanon with Beirut.

By Sunday evening, the army had besieged the mosque, sealing off access to it from all directions, and was going after al-Assir and his supporters, who have been agitating for months.

The NNA report said Assir was believed to be hiding inside the mosque with several of his followers.

The cleric and his followers support Sunni rebels in the Syria conflict, and he has threatened to clear apartments in Sidon where Hezbollah supporters live.

Sunday's clashes in Sidon deepened tensions in Lebanon. on edge since the Syrian conflict began more than two years ago.

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman called an emergency meeting of the security cabinet for Monday. NNA also reported sporadic shooting in the volatile city of Tripoli in the north, and the army announced additional force deployments in around Beirut.

The violence came a day after an 11-nation group that includes the U.S. met in the Qatari capital of Doha to coordinate military aid and other forms of assistance to the rebels.

Syria's al-Thawra newspaper, the mouthpiece of the government, assailed the Friends of Syria meeting.

"It's clear that the enemies of Syria are rushing to arm the terrorists to kill the chances for holding the Geneva conference," the newspaper said, referring to a U.S.-Russia initiative for bringing Assad's government and rebels together to negotiate an end to the crisis.

The Syrian paper pledged that the army would "continue the showdown to eliminate terrorism and restore security and stability."

Content Marketing Tips for Tech Brands: Attract New Business in ...

The old adage "you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar" holds true for digital marketers today. This is especially true for the technology industry, where the "honey" is valuable content that makes understanding technology, and its application, easy for consumers.

We're in a time of unprecedented growth and innovation. That's where the need for strong content marketing comes in! Content marketing is your ace in the hole when it comes to delighting customers and attracting new ones. Below are three great examples of content marketing initiatives that, when emulated, can bring success to your business as well.

1. Speak to your brand's area of expertise

GE's ecomagination site is brand journalism at its finest. Launched in 2005, ecomagination's content speaks directly to the brand's greater purpose, turning traditionally complex environmental subjects, like clean technology and sustainable infrastructure, into digestible topics. From zero-energy buildings to the potential for wind power, GE combines journalistic pieces with shorter posts that speak to the company's achievements and goals when it comes to resource efficiency.

Beyond informing consumers and educating readers, ecomagination's greater mission is to deliver valuable insights to key stakeholders and partners that share in GE's pursuit of green energy solutions. The site positions GE as a thought leader when it comes to the reduction of greenhouse gas, water use and the improvement of energy-efficient operations.

Tip: Identify your area of expertise, and create content that voices your brand's ultimate business and social objectives. Tout your performance by producing or licensing content that aligns with your brand's overall mission and purpose.

2. Humanize your brand

If your computer broke down in the early days of personal electronics, you packed it up and sent it back to the manufacturer for repair. To solve for this frustrating process and create a more personal, hands-on experience, Apple developed a retail concept complete with free in-store workshops, youth programs and individual lessons for existing customers.

Apple-using industry experts are frequent guest speakers at retail locations. By playing host to successful, well-respected individuals who use their products in daily life, Apple is cleverly aligning their brand with the notion of success, positioning themselves as thought leaders in a variety of industries. Last year, Apple hosted painter and illustrator William Low at their west village retail location, where he addressed his acceptance of digital media as an artist in an evolving landscape.

These unique offerings help customers to better understand their Apple products, providing them with tools for optimal use. Furthermore, the in-person element heightens Apple's visibility, humanizing the brand through direct employee-to-consumer interaction.

Tip: What can you learn from Apple's retail strategy? You don't have to build out a full retail offering in order to follow their lead. In fact, it's possible to take a page from Apple's strategy by creating exclusive online tutorials, Webinars or instructional videos that educate your consumers and highlight the advantages of your products. Want to attract brand evangelists but don't have the budget or brand cache to attract industry leaders for free? Try featuring your own consumers in videos. This requires far fewer resources than hiring professional talent, and guarantees you'll get authentic, from-the-heart testimonials that highlight your strengths and speak directly to your audience.

3. Inspire creativity; get your consumers involved

In an effort to capitalize on the increasing popularity of mobile as a global platform, Mozilla Firefox launched Firefox Flicks, a crowd sourced content marketing campaign that calls upon users to create their own videos on the subject of the mobile web.

Through this campaign Firefox succeeds in a variety of ways. First, the campaign lays the foundation for the promotion of their latest mobile operating system, Firefox OS. Next, it leverages their social consumer base, encouraging them to create on-brand, promotional content. Lastly, the campaign speaks to their credibility by partnering with industry-leading judges, including: Catherine Ogilvie, marketing general manager for Europe, the Middle East and Asia at Dolby, Robert Harvey, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Panavision and Edward Norton, famed actor, director and producer.
Prizes are distributed throughout the entire contest run, creating multiple chances for consumers to win, which in turn increases the likelihood of participation. Entrants have the opportunity to win cash, gift bags with Firefox swag and the opportunity to have their original film produced by the judges using professional equipment.

Tip: Stay on top of industry trends, and leverage your knowledge of innovation and the marketplace to create engaging content marketing strategies that leverage this insight. Launch new initiatives or services in tandem with crowd-sourced contests; in doing so you'll automatically generate free buzz around your product offerings. Remember to create engaging and fun incentives when it comes to contests. This will generate more entries and result in increased social sharing and participation over time. Firefox successfully leveraged the rise of mobile when promoting their new operating system, creating a fun, user-driven contest that has rallied support and generated buzz.

As a technology company, you have an incredible opportunity to open up the lines of communication with your customers, share your knowledge, and solve problems with, and for, your consumers. Take the actions highlighted above, and you'll be well on your way to using content marketing as a powerful tool to grow your business.

Real Estate Q&A: Hedge Funds Buying Homes and Inheriting ...

Q & AEach month, past San Diego State University?lecturer and Zillow Blog contributor Leonard Baron answers two questions from readers regarding buying, selling and investing. Have a question? Send it to?Leonard@ProfessorBaron.com

Hedge funds crowding out real estate buyers

Hi Leonard ? We are first-time buyers in Phoenix and can?t purchase because many hedge funds seem to be buying all the properties we want. We?re really frustrated and have started offering on properties that are not our top picks, just in hopes to at least buy something. But we are also considering just holding off for a while and staying renters. How long do you think it will be until the hedge funds stop ruining the market for all of us? Maria P., Phoenix, AZ

Well Maria, you?re not alone. In fact, many markets are short on inventory. The real bummer for buyers like yourself is that both prices and interest rates are up. However, don?t rush to buy property. You should buy the right property for you, for all the right reasons that are important to you. Don?t buy a property if you don?t ?love? it. So even with the increasing prices and interest rates, you?re probably best off to keep searching for a great-fit property that you will own for a long time instead of buying something that?s not right for you.

Many hedge funds are learning that owning and managing individual rental properties is not as easy nor as profitable as they?d hoped. The problem for buyers is that the hedge fund managers make money lining up investors and buying the properties (think acquisition fees, management fees, asset management fees, etc.), and they get those fees regardless of how good or bad the investment actually works out for their investors.

So that?s not much of an incentive for them to stop buying, even though the returns can?t be all that good. However, in the next few years most of those funds will probably realize that individual properties are not the great investments they originally penciled out and will probably start dumping properties so individuals like you can buy them.

Tax guidance:?Grandparent gifting property

Hi Professor ??My grandfather is getting very old, and he is going to give/gift an investment rental property he?s owned forever to me in the next couple of weeks as he?s unfortunately going into hospice. I don?t know much about the tax issues and inheritance issues, but Grandpa has instructed me to get guidance, and I?m wondering if I need to do something before he passes. Joshua N., Arlington, TX

Hi Joshua ??First and foremost I?m sorry to hear about your grandfather?s condition, but hopefully he?s lived a good life and is in comfortable surroundings. Also, always get professional tax advice; my guidance is just general information.

Yes, you absolutely need to contact a certified public accountant or lawyer ASAP. There are several issues, from the property income tax basis and depreciation amounts, to inheritance taxes and maybe even Texas property tax issues. And there are possibly probate court issues too.

One major issue is that if the transfer occurs before his passing, the current federal income tax basis on the property will transfer to you. That means if you sell the property in the next few years, you?ll probably have a huge tax bill. If you inherit the property after he passes, your federal income tax basis will be the ?stepped up? current market value, so if you sell the property, the tax impacts should be minimal. Also, if you inherit the property, you can start taking depreciation expense on the new ?stepped up? basis, which you won?t be able to do if he gifts you the property before death. And that could be a lot of tax savings to you for decades.

There may also be state property tax issues that should be addressed related to the transfer. And there could be state and/or federal inheritance tax issues that need to be addressed.

Also, does he have a revocable living trust (so his assets can pass to his beneficiaries outside of probate court)? This keeps the distribution of assets private and probably saves on court costs, so you want to address that issue with a lawyer, as it may take a week or two to set up a trust and transfer assets (cost should be $2,000 to $3,000).

There are lots of issues related to the transfer of any assets before and/or upon death. Spending a little money on competent guidance could save you tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in income taxes, property taxes and court fees over time. Grandpa is trying to help you one last time. Now follow his wishes and get on it!

The Effects Pedal For Effects Pedals Might Turn the Universe Inside Out

Scott Matthews, the son of Electro-Harmonix founder Mike Matthews, not only pointed me towards my favorite (Brooklyn-made) bicycle, but also once took me on a tour of the Electro-Harmonix guitar and effects pedal factory. Not only is it in the United States, when just about everything these days is made somewhere else, but it is in New York.

You can take the 7 train there. Talk about not sending manufacturing jobs overseas.

Scott has long dabbled in various technology pursuits, from a multi-paned webpage interface in the early dotcom days, to leading Electro-Harmonix?s successful YouTube outreach program, in which various musicians demo the pedals in YouTube product videos.

Now, he has invented his first effects pedal, and it?s a doozy. Essentially, the 8 Step Programis a sequencer pedal for effects pedals, which lets the user control how other effects pedals behave at a given time. It?s somewhat hard to explain ? your best bet might be to watch the above video, for starters. Then, here?s Electro-Harmonix? official description:

The EHX 8 Step Program plugs into the expression pedal or CV input of other effects pedals and synthesizers, delivering rhythmic sequencer control. With eight independent sliders, each controlling a sequence step, it can turn an ordinary auto-wah into a step filter, a tremolo into a syncopated pulse effect and a pitch-shifter into an arpeggiator.

And here?s what Scott told me about 8 Step Program back in January, when the wheels started turning to make his idea a reality:

I?m just a bit personally jazzed that something I suggested turned into a box. The interesting thing is that you don?t plug instruments into it. Instead, it?s a device for your CV (control voltage)/expression pedal chain. Meaning, for pedals/synths that accept a CV/expression pedal input, it plugs in there

What it does: You have 8 sliders that you can set for different CV levels (meaning, you can set 8 sliders each ranging from the equivalent of your foot all the way up to all the way down with a foot controller). And it then rhythmically cycles through the different settings. And you can change the parameters as it cycles.

I finally comprehend what this thing does. If you?re still struggling with it, check out the video again ? it?s fun, and like so many things Matthews-related, it?s from New York.

People anticipate others' genuine smiles, but not polite smiles

June 12, 2013 ? Smile and the world smiles with you -- but new research suggests that not all smiles are created equal. The research shows that people actually anticipate smiles that are genuine but not smiles that are merely polite. The differing responses may reflect the unique social value of genuine smiles.

"These findings give us the first clear suggestion that the basic processes that guide responses to reward also play a role in guiding social behavior on a moment-to-moment basis during interactions," explains psychological scientist and lead researcher Erin Heerey of Bangor University (UK).

The new research is reported in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

"No two interactions are alike, yet people still manage to smoothly coordinate their speech and nonverbal behaviors with those of another person," says Heerey. She wondered whether the intrinsic value of different social cues like smiles may play a role in shaping our response to those cues.

Polite smiles, for example, typically occur when sociocultural norms dictate that smiling is appropriate. Genuine smiles, on the other hand, signify pleasure, occur spontaneously, and are indicated by engagement of specific muscles around the eye.

If genuine smiles are a form of social reward, Heerey hypothesized, people should be more likely to anticipate genuine smiles than relatively less rewarding polite smiles.

An observational study showed that pairs of strangers getting to know one another not only exchanged smiles, they almost always matched the particular smile type, whether genuine or polite.

But, they responded much more quickly to their partners' genuine smiles than their polite smiles, suggesting that they were anticipating the genuine smiles.

Similarly, participants in a lab-based study learned key-press associations for genuinely smiling faces faster than those for politely smiling faces. Data from electrical sensors on participants' faces revealed that they engaged smile-related muscles when they expected a genuine smile to appear but showed no such activity when expecting polite smiles.

The different responses suggest that genuine smiles are more valuable social rewards. Previous research shows that genuine smiles promote positive social interactions, so learning to anticipate them is likely to be a critical social skill.

One of the novel aspects of the research, says Heerey, is the combination of naturalistic observation and controlled experimentation, which allowed her to explore the richness of real-life social interactions while also affording her the opportunity to investigate possible causal relationships.

Heerey believes that this approach could yield important applications over time:

"As we progress in our understanding of how social interactions unfold, these findings may help to guide the development of interventions for people who find social interactions difficult, such as those with social anxiety, autism, or schizophrenia."

Helen Crossley, also at Bangor University, was a co-author on the research.

The Brilliant Insanity Behind the New Mac Pro's Design

The Brilliant Insanity Behind the New Mac Pro's Design

The last we heard of the Power Mac G4 Cube?a computer everyone loved, but no one could quite figure out?was in a press release from 2001. Twelve years later, we've finally met its beautiful, brilliant, and not altogether sane successor.

Back in July of 2001, the future of the Cube wasn't entirely clear. In a press release, Apple's reps explained their reasoning:

?Apple? today announced that it will suspend production of the Power Mac? G4 Cube indefinitely. The company said there is a small chance it will reintroduce an upgraded model of the unique computer in the future, but that there are no plans to do so at this time.

?Cube owners love their Cubes, but most customers decided to buy our powerful Power Mac G4 minitowers instead,? said Philip Schiller, Apple?s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.?

And with that, Apple killed one of the most innovative personal computers it had ever produced. Placed between Apple?s entry-level iMac and high-end Power Mac, the Cube was too expensive for consumers and not expandable enough for pros. Still, everyone loved it because it was, for lack of a better description, awesome. And so, for the last twelve years, we hung onto that ?small chance" that Apple would reintroduce the Cube, hoping that someday, the product?s concept would finally make sense.

That day came yesterday.

The Concept

Last week, I wrote about the future of the Mac Pro, a time-tested machine that had slowly become the most anachronistic product from Apple?s hardware offerings. As I saw it, the company had four options: kill the Mac Pro, give the current Mac Pro case a spec bump, evolve the design, or completely change the game.

Apple obviously went with the fourth option. It?s important to consider why they would choose this path over the others. Successful revolutions of product archetypes occur when a team realizes that an underlying technology has advanced or been replaced. This is what happened with the iPhone. Every mobile phone company in the world had touchscreen designs they never released; Apple, though, was the first to realize that touch screens had caught up in usability and manufacturability. In cases like this, it pays to be the first to discover and take advantage of the opportunity. Usually, it puts you years ahead of the competition, which is stuck making products the old way.

Conversely, sometimes the archetype is too advanced for the underlying technology. For example, Alan Kay came up with the idea for a thin device with a keyboard that could be carried around like a book back in the 1970s. But it wasn?t until the 90s that computing technology could even approach what he had in mind, and it wasn?t until the 2010s that the tablet truly came of age. You can?t force an idea if the tech isn?t there to support it.

The concept of the new Mac Pro is very similar to that of the old Cube: A powerhouse PC that is very small and externally upgradable. That concept was not viable in 2000, when all we had for I/O was FireWire 400 and USB 1.1. Fast forward to 2013, and the technology has caught up to the archetype. We now have Thunderbolt 2, 802.11ac, and USB 3, not to mention cloud storage options. The expandability limitations are gone.

Put simply, we?ve come to a tipping point where the internals of a tower PC limit upgradability more than the externals do. There will be users who will miss optical media and PCI card slots?just like there were users who missed SCSI and floppy drives?but the vast majority of what gets added on to a pro computer today is done externally.

The Brilliant Insanity Behind the New Mac Pro's Design

The Design

Let me just say this about the Mac Pro: this type of design can only be produced by a company that is first, truly led by its industrial design team, and second, completely nuts. No sane engineer would ever let this leave the design stage because it goes against everything you?re supposed to do with electronics. You?re supposed to arrange boards parallel to each other to maximize space efficiency. You?re supposed to have I/O ports that attach to the board in parallel, not perpendicularly. You?re supposed to end up with something that is roughly the shape of a box, because that's the easiest and most efficient way to manufacture a device.

To get a design that looks like this on the outside, you have to start with the inside. Like the Cube, the new Mac Pro is designed around a thermal core that pulls air from the bottom to the top of the machine. Unlike the Cube, which relied on convection cooling alone, the Pro has a fan located at the top of the machine to accelerate the air moving through it. Apple is using some of the same tricks it first used on the Retina MacBook Pro to ensure the fan runs as quietly as possible with a specially designed blade.

The Brilliant Insanity Behind the New Mac Pro's Design

The triangular thermal core is a single piece of extruded aluminum that has been machined and anodized black. Extruding aluminum is a lot like using the old Play-Doh Extruder, except you?re using aluminum instead of Play-Doh. Large, solid billets of aluminum are heated in an oven and then forced through a small die. That triangular-shaped core comes out of the extruder as one large tube. Here's a video demonstrating the process:

After the tube is cooled, it gets cut into shorter sections and then goes through a series of secondary machining operations, creating mounting fixtures that allow other parts to attach directly to the core. Herein lies the beauty of the thermal core design. Not only does it act as a cooling chamber, it also provides the underlying structure for the entire device. Every component attaches directly to the core?boards, fan, the base, and even the outer housing. It?s an extension of Apple?s "unibody" philosophy: Several parts are replaced by one well-designed part. This allows Apple to reduce complexity and invest money in making the remaining parts much higher quality.

The outer housing is made through a process called impact extrusion, shown in the video above. This process is commonly used to make products like Sigg water bottles. A solid puck of aluminum, called a slug, is loaded into the machine and then punched into shape in one quick motion. After this step, the part goes through a series of secondary operations that cut the holes for the I/O and add the now-trademark Apple polished chamfer. The part is then polished and anodized black, creating a mirrored black finish.

Here again, Apple took the hard way out. A typical sandblasted finish?like you would see on the back of the iPhone 5?hides imperfections in the surface. Polishing makes imperfections more pronounced. Basically, Apple needs to get the housing absolutely perfect before it gets polished.

The Brilliant Insanity Behind the New Mac Pro's Design

Small Details That Caught My Eye

  • The location of power button could be problematic. Maybe people will be more likely to leave their Mac Pros on their desks now that they are so tiny, but no one will be able to hide them under a desk because the power button is hidden amongst the back ports. Of course, why would you want to hide something that looks this good, but it?s still a pain in the butt. Another point?because the housing is polished, you?re going to leave a ton of fingerprints on the case when you hunt around for the power. A possible solution: What if the top of thermal core, inside the outer housing where I think the antennas are located, was one large power button? It would be hidden from view and would be a cool way to interact with the machine.

  • Black. Everything?the board, the aluminum inner structure, the fasteners?is jet black. It looks sinister. In a good way.

  • Backlit ports. The ports on the back are backlit when you turn the machine around to plug in a new device. Of course they do.

  • Polished chamfer. The detail that was first seen on the iPhone 5 and then propagated over to the iPod line and iPad mini shows up here as well. This is typically an expensive process, but Apple gets away with it because of economies of scale. A classic Ive & Cook mindmeld. If you use an expensive process on your entire product line over the course of millions of products, you?re going to dramatically lower its cost. Aesthetically, I like it much more on the Mac Pro than I do on Apple?s other products. On the Pro it?s a nice detail that makes you want to peer into the core of the beast. On products like the iPhone 5, I think it?s a bit too distracting.

  • Antennas. After trying to figure out how Apple was sending Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals through the all metal casing, I think I found an the answer. The antennas seem to be located at the very top of the Mac Pro, just inside the opening to the thermal core. It?s likely that the domed part that covers the fan?s motor is a material that allows signals to pass through it. Possibly glass or plastic.

  • Assembled in the US. To get this designation, you have to meaningfully modify the components to get the product to its finished state. You can?t just ship a product to the US, put it in a box and slap a ?Assembled in USA? sticker on it. If I had to guess, most of the electronics were made overseas, while the housing, assembly of the product, and packaging were made in the US. Good for Apple for taking another step down this route.

  • Beyond the desktop. Can you imagine how cool server farms of these things are going to look? If I had to design a data center I would, without a doubt, arrange Mac Pros like the pod towers from The Matrix.

It?s hard not to gush about the Mac Pro. The conceptual thinking behind the device is equalled by its design execution. If the final product Apple releases later this year matches the promise made yesterday, this is as close to perfect as you can make a pro desktop computer in 2013.

Looking at this machine, you can understand the 8 Mile, ?Lose Yourself? moment Phil Schiller had on stage yesterday. ?Can?t innovate anymore my ass,? he said, literally losing himself in the moment and looking to pick a fight. If you go back and listen to his introduction you can practically hear the adrenaline rushing through his voice as he shoved the question of Apple losing its touch back in the face of its critics. This machine has swagger?and apparently, Apple still does too.

China launches fifth manned space mission, set to be its longest ever

A Chinese rocket carrying three taikonauts lifted off Tuesday to begin a 15-day mission. The mission is China's next step toward building a space station.

Three Chinese taikonauts lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu Province for a 15-day mission that will take them to China's experimental lab module Tiangong 1, which orbits some 210 miles above Earth.

The mission is the longest yet for the Chinese human spaceflight program and the first truly operational ? and final ? mission for Tiangong 1. The crew will test new docking maneuvers as they arrive, then perform experiments and hold a live lecture from space for students in China.

The launch, which took place at 5:38 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, went flawlessly, with the crew reaching orbit about nine minutes later. If all goes well, the crew aboard the Shenzhou 10 spacecraft should reach the lab module on Thursday.

Shenzhou 10 represents China's fifth human-spaceflight mission in 10 years ? a more methodical pace than the US and the former Soviet Union pursued during the Cold War.

During the past decade, China has sent 10 different taikonauts into space, including two women. Each mission has represented a progressive step over the previous one ? first, with a John Glenn-like orbital mission that lasted nearly 21 hours and 23 minutes in 2003. Two years later, two taikonauts spent 5 days on orbit. In 2008, China launched its first three-person crew for a three-day mission that included the program's first spacewalk. Last year, Shenzhou 9 carried three crew members on a 13-day mission to Tiangong 1.

The program's near-term goal is to orbit a space station comparable to Russia's Mir space station, which over 10 years grew from a single module into a seven-module station. The Russians abandoned and deorbited Mir in 2001 in favor of its participation in the International Space Station project.

Tiangong 1 is the first step toward China's space-station goal. China's human-spaceflight plans call for launching a second, larger module later this year. Dubbed Tiangong 2, it is designed to host a crew of three for up to 20 days and has a second docking port to accept resupply missions. Tiangong 3 is slated for launch in 2015 as the core for the new station. A modified Tiangong 1 is expected to serve as an unmanned cargo carrier to support an eventual space station.

The launch comes as the US has embarked on yet another study aimed at recommending future directions for NASA's human spaceflight program. Last August, at the behest of Congress, the National Academies' Human Spaceflight Committee began holding a series of meetings to gather ideas from the public, aerospace specialists, and other stakeholders. The panel expects to present its final report next May.

Horse racing-Champion trainer Henry Cecil dies at 70

* Trainer of wonder horse Frankel dies of cancer

* Cecil won a record 75 times at Royal Ascot (Adds details and reaction)

LONDON, June 11 (Reuters) - English champion racehorse trainer Henry Cecil, who triumphed a record 75 times at Royal Ascot, died of cancer on Tuesday at the age of 70.

"It is with great sadness that Warren Place Stables confirms the passing of Sir Henry Cecil earlier this morning," said a statement on the Newmarket trainer's official website www.sirhenrycecil.com.

"Following communication with the British Horseracing Authority, a temporary licence will be allocated to Lady Cecil," it added.

In his later years, the 10-times champion trainer looked after Frankel, the highest-rated racehorse in the world who was unbeaten in 14 starts before retirement last year with almost three million pounds ($4.66 million)in earnings from 14 victories.

The colt was named after American trainer Robert 'Bobby' Frankel, who also died of cancer in 2009.

Knighted in 2011 for his services to horse racing, Cecil was responsible for 25 British Classic winners and ranks among the greatest trainers of all time.

From an aristocratic background, Cecil first took out a training licence in 1969 and celebrated his first British Classic win in 1975 with Bolkonski - ridden by Italian jockey Frankie Dettori's father Gianfranco - in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

He trained four Derby winners - Slip Anchor, Reference Point, Commander in Chief and Oath - as well as six 1,000 Guineas and four St Leger winners.

Slip Anchor, owned by Lord Howard de Walden and ridden by American jockey Steve Cauthen, turned in one of the great performances to win at Epsom by seven lengths in 1985.

An elegant and eloquent presence, even though gaunt and with his voice reduced to a whisper by bouts of chemotherapy towards the end, Cecil spoke movingly last year of how Frankel had helped to sustain him in his fight against stomach cancer.

"I cannot believe in the history of horse racing that there has ever been a better racehorse," he said.

British Horseracing Authority (BHA) chief executive Paul Bittar paid tribute to Cecil, describing him as: "one of the great characters and one of the great trainers in British racing for a long time, with an endless number of wonderful horses.

"It's tragically sad," Bittar said after being told of Cecil's death. "Having said that, what a wonderful way to be able to finish his career with the greatest race horse (Frankel) that any of us will ever get to see."

Cecil, whose father died before he was born during World War Two, was encouraged into training by his stepfather Cecil Boyd-Rochfort - a five-times champion trainer himself.

"I do everything by instinct really, not by the book. I like to think I've got a feeling for and understand my horses, that they tell me what to do really," he said in a 2011 interview with the Daily Telegraph.

"I like to think I have a sort of rapport where I don't just treat them as something to help me earn a living. It's a partnership."

IRS manager: White House not involved in reviews

(AP) ? A self-described conservative Republican who is a manager in the Internal Revenue Service office that targeted tea party groups told investigators that he, not the White House, set the review in motion, the top Democrat on the House watchdog committee said Sunday.

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., released a partial transcript of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform interview with the unnamed manager in the IRS' Cincinnati office. In it, the employee said the extra scrutiny for tea party groups' tax exempt status was an effort to be consistent in reviewing applications and not driven by politics.

"He is a conservative Republican working for the IRS. I think this interview and these statements go a long way to what's showing that the White House was not involved in this," Cummings said.

"Based upon everything I've seen, the case is solved. And if it were me, I would wrap this case up and move on, to be frank with you," Cummings added.

In the five-hour interview conducted last week, the manager said one of his employees brought to him a tea party group's application for tax exempt status. The manager said he recognized the political implications of the decision and flagged it for an office in Washington. Some Republicans have suggested that the Washington office initiated the close examination.

Republicans have complained the IRS targeted tea party groups because they are critical of Democrats and President Barack Obama. An internal IRS report found the agency improperly targeted the small-government advocates for additional scrutiny.

The uproar forced out the acting IRS chief and put the White House on the defensive against those who suggested Obama was using the government to go after political enemies.

Sunday's release of yet another partial transcript was unlikely to quiet those critics.

"The American public wants to know why targeting occurred and who was involved," said oversight chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., in statement released Sunday. "The testimony excerpts Ranking Member Cummings revealed today did not provide anything enlightening or contradict other witness accounts. The only thing Ranking Member Cummings left clear in his comments today is that if it were up to him the investigation would be closed."

Oversight committee investigators have now interviewed at least five IRS employees about targeting conservative groups for additional scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status during the 2010 and 2012 elections. Some employees said they believed that officials in Washington were directing their work but didn't show any direct evidence to support their statements.

Cummings and Issa have been releasing portions of interviews that back up their assertions. But neither has released full transcripts, making it difficult to discern a complete story. Also, the portions released tend to offer employees' views on what was happening, not definitive orders that directed them to scrutinize closely tea party applications.

Cummings declined to release the full transcript of the interview he posted on Democrats' oversight website.

A Cummings spokeswoman, Jennifer Hoffman, declined to release the employees' identity.

In the 15-page memo describing their interview with the manager, Democrats on the committee said they were withholding the employee's name at the request of the IRS.

Cummings appeared on CNN's "State of the Union" and CBS' "Face the Nation."

Graphic locates Santa Monica where a shooting took place near a college campus. Updated with new death toll.

(AP) ? The gunman who went on a chaotic rampage killing four people before being fatally shot by police at a college campus planned the attack and was capable of firing 1,300 rounds of ammunition, the police chief said Saturday.

"Any time someone puts on a vest, of some sort, comes out with a bag full of loaded magazines, has an extra receiver, has a handgun and has a semi-automatic rifle, carjacks folks, goes to a college, kills more people and has to be neutralized at the hands of the police, I would say that that's premeditated," said Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks.

The killer would have turned 24 on Saturday, but Seabrooks wouldn't identify him because his next of kin was out of the country. Police had an encounter with him seven years ago, but she wouldn't elaborate because he was a juvenile at the time.

The chief spoke near a display of weapons and ammo recovered from Santa Monica College where the killings ended Friday when police gunned him down in the library, where students were studying for finals.

Among items on display were surveillance photos of a man in black entering the library with an assault-style rifle by his side.

The gunman fatally shot one woman in the head outside the library before entering the building and opening fire as students ran for cover.

Students hid into what Seabrooks called a "safe room" in the library and barricaded the door for safety.

"They stacked items found in the safe room against the door, hunkered down and avoided shots fired through the drywall at them while they were in that room," she said.

The violence, which lasted little more than 10 minutes, started about a mile away when the gunman began shooting at a house, and it caught on fire. Two bodies were later found inside.

Two officials told The Associated Press that the killings began as a domestic violence incident and the victims in the home were the gunman's father and brother. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the case.

As flames rose from the house, the man, wearing what appeared to be a ballistic jacket, he shot a woman passing by in a car and carjacked another woman at gunpoint. He directed her to drive to the college campus, having her stop so he could shoot along the way, police said.

He fired on a city bus where three women were left with minor injuries. One had shrapnel-type injuries and the two others had injuries not related to gunfire. They were treated at a hospital and released.

The gunman also fired on police cars, bystanders and pedestrians, police said.

From there, the chaos shifted to the college, a two-year school with about 34,000 students located among homes and strip malls more than a mile inland from the city's famous pier, promenade and expansive, sandy beaches.

In a faculty parking lot on the edge of campus, he fired on two people in a red Ford Explorer that crashed through a block wall. The driver was killed, police said, and a passenger was in critical condition after undergoing surgery UCLA Medical Center, doctors said. On Saturday, authorities identified the driver as Carlos Navarro Franco, 68, of West Los Angeles, who worked at the school.

College employee Joe Orcutt was in the lot and said the gunman looked calm and composed as he fired at him. Orcutt jumped out of the way.

"He's just standing there, like he's modeling for some ammo magazine," Orcutt said, "seeing who he could shoot, one bullet at a time, like target practice."
