Are you using StumbleUpon and Pinterest to help drive traffic to your website? If not, it?s time to get in the game, but first, if you aren?t using either of these social media outlets, let?s explain a little about what they are and then dig in on how to use them.
StumbleUpon
According to their website at StumbleUpon they ?Help you easily discover new and interesting stuff on the Web. Tell us what you like and we?ll introduce you to amazing web pages, videos, photos and more that you wouldn?t have found on your own.? Basically, when you create a free StumbleUpon account, you choose areas of interest and start ?stumbling.? You are shown a variety of web pages based on the categories you chose and can like or dislike them. StumbleUpon also offer recommendations on people and businesses to follow.
A surprise here may be that according to Jeff Bullas, this social media venue, ?Drives over 50 percent of social media traffic in the United States.? That?s a lot of traffic! Bullas created a StumbleUpon infographic (see at right) to show just how popular and viral postings on this social media venue can be.
Using StumbleUpon
At Sunrise Signs, we encourage readers of our blog posts to share them on their StumbleUpon pages. Think of StumbleUpon as a ?pay it forward? kind of social media tool where someone ?stumbles? your web page, article, video, image or blog post and from there, so do others, and so on.
More than not on Facebook pages, the posts that go viral are images, not stories, and StumbleUpon allows those images to appear to entice more stumbles. Before you create your free StumbleUpon account, a few rules:
Be Picky When Stumbling ? Try not to stumble your own content, allow others to do that by supplying the StumbleUpon button like we do. StumbleUpon isn?t an advertising venue and too many of your own stumbles will sway followers away.
Be a Diverse Stumbler ? By this we mean like a lot of things that are relevant to your audience. For example, we do a lot of vehicle graphics and wraps but that doesn?t mean we only like pages that are about cars. We know our customers like other things like sports, music, science, etc. Don?t stumble the world but do find some diversity.
Clarify Your Stumbles ? When you do create a stumble, add a unique description. If you?re too vague in the description, others may not even like or click on your stumble post.
Don?t Fool Other Stumblers ? We?ve seen this a? lot where one company will create more than one StumbleUpon account. This only confuses other users. Let?s say you have two locations, don?t create a StumbleUpon account for each and instead, put them both under one umbrella account.
Think of Pinterest as an online billboard because that?s what it really is only with a twist! When you create your free Pinterest Account, you immediately receive a free ?Pin it? button that is placed on your toolbar or bookmark bar of favorite sites. From there, anytime you come across something you want to share, you can click on ?Pin It? and Pinterest chooses images from the web page and allows you to place the selected image on a certain board within your Pinterest Page and say something about the Pin. Sound confusing? It?s really not.
Pinterest has approximately 10 million unique visitors every month?that?s right every month. And, with Pinterest, it?s okay to like your own web pages and place them within your personal ?boards.? And each pin is a link to the original post!
How Pinterest Works
Once you create your account and profile,? you can start pinning right away. Simply find a web page, photo or image that moves you and hit the ?Pin It? button. You?ll be directed to choose a? board you want to pin the post to (you can create as many boards as you want) and then, describe your pin (be specific) and then hit ?Pin It!? Once you pin an interest you have the option to Tweet your pin to your Twitter account and all of your pins can be linked to your business Facebook page. What?s easier than that?
One thing you cannot do is pin directly from Facebook but that?s really okay because you want to grab the best image from the web page you want to share on your boards and Pinterest does that nicely from web pages.
In addition, others can ?re-pin? your pins or invite you to post on their boards. For example, a friend of mine saw I liked sports so much so they now allow me to pin my sports interests directly to their shared board?and they?re following all my other pins!
On our Pinterest Board seen here, you can see we like a variety of things including our business products and services. Connect with your community like we do by also pinning things within the community?because we serve the Philadelphia area (just one of the many areas we serve) we created a Philadelphia board and pin to it regularly.
Bottom Line
Both Pinterest and StumbleUpon are much like what we do here at Sunrise Signs?offer a visual and visuals are something the eye catches right away?much like our vehicle graphics and wraps. Increase your reach and help build traffic to your website and increase brand identity by learning how to use Pinterest and StumbleUpon. You?ll be glad you did!
